For 2 days we tramped around the city, amazed. It's nice and small but has incredible monuments. For me the wats (Buddhist temples) far surpassed the ones I saw in Thailand. The Thai ones were too garishly colorful for me, but here they are sandstone with muted color but beautifully carved. Common themes are lotus-shaped towers and the serpent, called Naga. Naga often adorns long winding staircases and you also see the triple-Naga with their tails round around each other. (The serpent is also another symbol of ancient goddess/animist religions, and of course shows up in Genesis....) Even the humblest of country villages in Cambodia have gorgeous wats and lintel-covered entry gates.
