At any rate, I was a little bummed by how touristy Thailand was. Anton was shocked
at how much it had changed since he was last there, about 3 years ago.
From Bangkok we planned to do the circuit of Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and VietNam)
and then return to
Bangkok as a hub for the next part of our journey. The logistics
can be kind of a brainteaser--we got the full
download from a couple we hung out with in Bio's Bong Huts--because certain
borders close, and certain visas are faster and cheaper to get in some
places than in others.
So we opted for the counter-clockwise plan: fly from Bangkok to
Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia (no way to go overland through the
northwest border where the Kymer Rouge are), then take a taxi across the
Cambodian/Vietnam border all the way from Phnom Penh to Saigon, then skip north Vietnam and cross over at the middle (skinny part
of Vietnam) into southeastern Laos.
